Nichols Family Research
David W. Nichols, was born in Steuben County, New York in 1832, according to both his obituary,
and the bio of his son, Adrian Nichols.
According to information from the Fulton County Historical Atlas of 1875,
David was the son of William and Adeline (Bennett) Nichols who were also both born in Steuben County, New York, as supported by
the 1850 & 1860 Hillsdale Michigan census information.
The 1875 Atlas further states William Nichols was the son of Ezra and Avis (Sabin) Nichols, both of whom were also born in New York according to the same 1850 census records.
David's father, William Nichols, was born about 1811.
William's father, Ezra Nichols, was born about 1780.
Sometime in the 1840's, this entire Nichols clan, consisting of two generations
of 15 family members, including several young children, relocated from
Steuben County, New York to Hillsdale County, Michigan.
In the days of horse drawn wagons, this was an arduous journey across rough terrain of over 400 miles. At the time of this journey, Ezra Nichols would have been in his 60's. What could have prompted him in his "golden years" to uproot his family
and attempt this sort of quest?
